Category Archives: Growing up in 80′s and 90′s

This section is broadly targeted at those of us who were born in the top 25 cities of India (well, by population, if you ask) and between the years 1965 to 1980. So, you may be 31-47 years of age today. The 1965 born would have been 10 years old in 1975 and the 1980 born would be 20 years old in 2000. Postulating that the most impressionable age for anyone is 10-20 years of age, 1975-2000 would be the period where all of us from this 1965-1980 born phase would have passed through this impressionable age, and hence that’s the period we will focus on in this section. The 2 big “events” in this 1975-2000 period were the rise & dominance of Amitabh Bachhan and that of Reliance Industries (Indira Gandhi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Infosys were the other 3 luminaries in this period but each only for part of the period). This piece is a continuation of Part I of “Growing up in 80s and 90s”, wherein we read about the single most impactful entity – Doordarshan and Television in general, on the lives of people born from 1965-1980, the Amitabh-Reliance … Continue reading
